Okay, I’m not paying for two servers for a third month … so I have to get it done by tomorrow.
Apologies in advance for any downtime, which I will seek to minimize.
Server Migration in Progress
March 30th, 2009MySQL Restart Damaged Rumor Forum Tables
March 10th, 2009Working to fix the problem now.
Experiencing Site Slowness
March 6th, 2009Something slowed up the pace of backups last night [best as I can tell, a variety of HTTP pingfloods from script kiddies], so the backups are still progressing during normal traffic, which causes slowness. Sorry, not really anything I can do about it other than cancel the backups, which I think you’d agree is bad.
We’ll be on the newer box soon.
Rumor Forum Upgrade
February 28th, 2009So, you know, there’s downtime and stuff. Come on, it’s Saturday night. Go bowling or something.
Twitter Updates for 2008-12-14
December 14th, 2008- Nope, it’s DNS problems. Gah. I hate DNS. #

Server Offline > DNS Issues
December 14th, 2008Not sure what’s going on, but I lost connectivity to the server. I’ve done a reboot request, which failed, so the NOC is investigating. Thanks for your patience, and I apologize for the downtime.
Nope, it was DNS issues. The Planet brought a new system on last night, and things are wonky with it. It’ll be a while before new data propogates, I reckon.
Overnight Downtime
October 22nd, 2008We had a power failure with the server about 0330 CDT this morning, but we were back online by 0415. I was safely in the arms of Morpheus and the mask of my CPAP for a sleep study, so I didn’t take the call … but all is well.
Minor Invasion by Single User
August 10th, 2008All:
We had an intruder log in via SSH from Eastern Europe yesterday on one of the accounts, for the express purpose of inserting some extraneous JavaScript at the end of every index.php file on that account. I feel quite confident that this account was the only one affected by the intruder, as this is the only record of that IP address on the server and I have seen no other unusual activity. That said, you are encouraged to change your cPanel/FTP passwords on a regular basis and to make them difficult to guess. cPanel now has a function that helps evaluate the strength of passwords, and I have a simple technique for generating difficult-to-guess passwords.
Thanks for your attention. Please email me if you have concerns.
MySQL Slowness
August 4th, 2008The MySQL server is showing some flukiness, so I’ve restarted it. This should explain any errors you’ve seen in the last few minutes.
[177 days of uptime on the server. Impressive.]
OpenDNS Not Resolving for rocksmyfaceoff.net
March 21st, 2008I think the title is self-explanatory; nothing is demonstrably wrong with the box. Am investigating.
1729 CDT: The issue is limited to rocksmyfaceoff.net, not www.rocksmyfaceoff.net. Very strange.
1924 CDT: It has apparently re-resolved.
