A user’s shell script is causing the server’s load to spiral out of control. I’m doing all I can to shut down the script, but my access to the server is limited by the system being overloaded.
Update (1550 CDT): The box was rebooted by the NOC and we’re back online. I’ll keep a close eye on it for the next little while, and the user whose script went awry is looking into it.
I was just about to IM you…
Blame it on $Keith!!!
No, I know whose script went wonky, but at this point, I’m wholly unable to hit the server, and my attempts to get it shut down or power cycled have been fruitless.
Who is Misty?
One of my close personal friends.
kill -9
Mark: I couldn’t kill -9 them all fast enough, and now it’s so overloaded that I can’t SSH in and do anything about it.
Trust me, I’ve not been doing this since just last week.
I figured as much. In the past, I’ve written a shell script to kill runaway shell scripts. kill -9 1 would shutdown the server.
man, don’tcha just hate it when your friend worlds overlap because of outage issues?
Doesn’t bother me a bit, Misty.
Just don’t let him tell you we’re his “college” friends!
Misty knows better. She’s met many of my college friends.
