Server Overloaded Due to Spammer Bouncebacks

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Hey all:

The box has been overloaded this morning because the domain name of one of our hostees is being used by a spammer; as the plethora of bounced email from dead addresses comes back our way, the server is struggling to handle the load. I’m watching the issue and working to handle it as much as possible—unfortunately, there’s not a ton that we can do about this that doesn’t affect services for that user [e.g.: blocking all incoming mail].

Server Overloaded

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

A user’s shell script is causing the server’s load to spiral out of control. I’m doing all I can to shut down the script, but my access to the server is limited by the system being overloaded.

Update (1550 CDT): The box was rebooted by the NOC and we’re back online. I’ll keep a close eye on it for the next little while, and the user whose script went awry is looking into it.

Server Temporarily Offline

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Hello all: I patched the operating system kernel for the server this morning and then proceeded to reboot it thereafter; the server has not come back online. I’m working the issue with the datacenter.

Update: Before I could get a report in, the server came back online. It may be a bit sluggish for the first few minutes as services come back online.
